The Clutter Fairy Weekly #181

A Hard Bargain: More of Your Most Difficult Organizing Challenges

Some categories of decluttering and organizing are harder than others. But if we focus on the sources of the difficulty, we gain fresh insight that will help us face our worst problem areas. In episode #181 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores more factors that make organizing projects and tasks difficult and suggests strategies to help you face those challenges. (This episode expands on the discussion from our August 29, 2023, show.)

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Not Because They’re Easy, But Because They’re Hard

This week’s assignment is the same as last week’s! If you’ve already tried it, we encourage you to go through the steps again for another category of stuff.

We’re asking you to examine a tough decluttering decision to see what you can learn from it about yourself:

  • Identify a category of stuff in which you experience difficulty or discomfort as you work to declutter and organize.
  • Select one item from that category. Pick something for which you’re struggling to make a keep/toss decision.
  • Write down three reasons you’d like to keep the object.
  • Write down three reasons why you should let the thing go.
  • Set the item and your list aside to revisit later in the week. Reflect on whether anything has changed in your thinking about this item.
