The Clutter Fairy Weekly #228

A Roadmap for Downsizing: Planning for Your Smaller, Simpler Life

Moving to a smaller home is a complex process that requires careful planning and tough decisions. But sooner or later, we all need to reduce our possessions, either to fit in a smaller space or so we can comfortably and safely age in place. In episode #228 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explains how to plan for a smaller living space and applies downsizing lessons to “right-sizing” the stuff in our cluttered homes.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Trial Downsize

This week’s assignment is to survey your space through a downsizing lens to look for opportunities to reduce clutter:

  • Imagine a situation in which you would have to fit all of your current possessions into a significantly smaller living space.
  • Now do a walk-through of your home, making a list of any large items, furniture, storage containers, or collections of stuff that would be difficult to accommodate in a reduced space.
  • For each item on your list, assign a grade or score for how important it is to you to keep this object in your imaginary downsized space.
  • Now reflect on the item or items that scored the lowest on your list, and decide whether you’re ready to let any of them go—or at least to make a plan for how you’d dispose of them in the event of an actual downsizing move.
