A Rock and a Hard Place: Facing Difficult Organizing Challenges

Some categories of decluttering and organizing are harder than others…sometimes a lot harder. But if we focus on the sources of the difficulty, we may gain fresh insight that will help us face our worst problem areas. In episode #180 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores the factors that make the hardest organizing projects and tasks so difficult and offers strategies to help you face those challenges.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

An Unstoppable Force or an Immovable Object

This week’s assignment is to explore one tough decluttering decision to to see what it can teach you:

  • If you haven’t already done so, identify the category of stuff in which you experience the most difficulty as you try to declutter and organize.
  • Select an item in that category about which you’re struggling to decide whether to keep or to toss the item.
  • Write down three arguments in favor of keeping the object.
  • Write down three arguments in favor of discarding or rehoming the item.
  • Set the item and your list aside. Revisit them later in the week. Reflect on whether anything has shifted in your thinking about this thing.
