Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Self-talk for Living with Less

This week’s assignment is to craft some positive self-talk to help you manage a part of your life that’s vulnerable to clutter:

  • Identify a space, function, or aspect of your home or life that’s prone to becoming a collection or source of clutter. (For example, Cheryl, who asked today’s question about self-talk to prepare for shopping, made a connection between shopping behavior and a tendency to re-clutter.)
  • Reflect on the habits, routines, thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires, etc., that make this part of your life particularly susceptible to clutter.
  • Jot down a few affirmations or positive statements to express how you’d prefer to respond or behave with respect to this area of your life. (For example, Cheryl might say, “Just because it’s cute doesn’t mean I need to bring it home from the store.”)
  • Practice repeating your affirmations or statements several times throughout the week, especially if you find yourself in circumstances that trigger your tendency to accumulate clutter. Remember to say them when you can see yourself adding clutter to your space, as a way to interrupt the impulse to accumulate more.
