The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.
Adjust Your Mindset
This week’s assignment is to try an exercise aimed at shifting your mindset about some the stuff in your home. We encourage you to experiment with any or all of these approaches:
- Confront negative emotions. Do you associate feelings of anxiety or loss with decluttering your stuff? Process those emotions through writing, another creative outlet, or conversation with a trusted friend.
- Set aside sentimentality. Explore your feelings about an item that you’re keeping for sentimental reasons.
- Just say ”no.” Considering discarding or donating an item that you received as a gift, a purchase you regret, or anything you’re keeping out of guilt or a sense of obligation.
- Focus on functionality. Reflect on how often you use or enjoy the items that share your space. Are they paying their way in practical use, or are their better ways you could use the space they occupy?
- Visualize the benefits. Think about how decluttering will improve your health, safety, ease of movement, peace of mind, etc.
