How Many Is Too Many? Setting Limits on Your Stuff | Short Takes

An audience member asked, “How many items in each category is healthy? Excessive but okay? Way too much?” To arrive at an answer, we need to consider the category, the context, and the limits of your space, money, time, and energy. In episode #236 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, contemplates the question “How many is too many?” and discusses other short topics suggested by our viewers and listeners.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Set a Limit

This week’s assignment is to decide what criteria will determine your limit on a collection that’s starting to get out of control:

  • If you didn’t already take this week’s survey, answer the following question: What collection or category of items in your home is in danger of crossing over into “too many” or “too much”? (If you took the survey, you may stick with or revisit your answer to this question.)
  • Consider any factors we’ve discussed today that should weigh upon your decision to grow or limit the collection or category. For example:
    • What are the space constraints?
    • What is your budget for this category or collection?
    • How much work goes into storing, cleaning, and maintaining this category or collection?
    • What’s the lifespan of items in this category?
    • And so on….
  • Now establish a limit for the number or volume of items that you plan to keep in this category or collection going forward.
