The Clutter Fairy Weekly #201

Love Me, Love My Clutter: Organizing Styles and Relationships

We love the people in our lives—and we also love our stuff. But sometimes our feelings about and behavior with regard to our clutter can create distance, conflict, or tension with people we care about. In episode #201 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, examines the ways in which our attachment to stuff complicates our relationships and offers strategies for defusing conflict and holding space for love.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Nurture a Relationship

This week’s assignment is to work toward improving a relationship that’s suffered as a result of clutter:

  • Reflect on a way in which stuff has adversely affected a relationship in your life. For example:
    • The condition of your home has created conflict with your spouse, partner, or living companion.
    • Clutter and mess have prevented you from hosting guests or has caused you to isolate yourself from friends.
    • The state of your stuff has damaged your relationship with yourself—that is, with your own goals, wishes, desires, needs, and dreams.
  • Brainstorm a few actions you might take to improve the situation you reflected on above.
  • Make a commitment to tackle the first item on your list this week.
