The Clutter Fairy Weekly #229

Stories We Tell About Our Stuff: Organizing Myths versus Reality

Many of us approach organizing projects with our heads full of myths, legends, and flat-out lies we’ve accumulated from popular TV shows, mass-market books, nagging parents, and other people’s limiting beliefs. In episode #229 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, uncovers the realities hiding behind popular myths, misconceptions, and limiting beliefs about decluttering and organizing our stuff.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Create Your Own Legend

This week’s assignment is to dream up a positive story to replace some of the myths, misconceptions, or limiting beliefs echoing around inside your head:

  • Set aside a few minutes to reflect on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your decluttering and organizing projects.
  • Imagine how your life will be different in your beautiful, clear, decluttered, organized space.
  • Now write a few sentences about the ways that you’ll enjoy your home in its “ideal” condition. What new activities will you try? What hobbies, art forms, or entertainments will you bring back into your life?
  • If writing isn’t your jam, make a drawing, painting, or collage to express or illustrate what your organized life will be like.

And here’s the alternative tittle mentioned in this episode:

  • Think of an item in your home that you can’t live without.
  • Spend a few minutes reflecting on how you’d live without the item in question.
  • Notice any changes in your attitudes or beliefs about this item.
