Briefly describe the category or collection of items.I have a collection of unopened unused watercolour and other art supplies.
Which of these statements best describes your strategy or approach for keeping the category of stuff you described above under control?I started with painting & drawing classes whilst being treated for a burnout/mental breakdown/complicated grief. In the beginning I was reasonable with my purchases but as I was quite sick I got so I had difficulty putting anything on paper but still spent time and money acquiring art supplies, online courses, and some art instruction books. No further purchases since 4-5 years.
Describe any issues you experience with using, storing, displaying, cleaning, maintaining, or organizing the category or collection you described above. This category is slightly organized. The books are together on a shelf, the sketch and paint books/papers are together, varied supplies are in 3-4 containers. They’re in a room of doom.
Does you home have a “command center”—a spot where you spend a significant amount of time in a variety of activities (e.g., watching TV, reading, doing paperwork, eating meals or snacks, etc.)?Yes
Where is your command center?Dining room table?
If you sit in your command center and look around you, which of the following items are within close reach?
  • Dirty dishes or drinking vessels
  • Unread mail
  • Unfinished projects
  • Trash or recyclables
  • Papers to be filed
  • Bills to be paid
  • Books in progress
  • Electronic devices or accessories
  • Discarded clothing or shoes
  • Medications
  • Other people’s misplaced stuff
  • Pet toys
  • Other
You selected “Other” above. Please elaborate. The house is fairly open ie no walls between entrance, living room, dining room, and small kitchen. The computer is 4 feet from the one and only table, and from the table you see all those areas fully.
How well does your command center fulfill the functions for which you use it?

Not well because it is not an assigned area. Items get moved about, shuffled, heaps occur and get swept. I haven’t taken the time and care to assign and maintain a command center since the office/library/spare room was overfilled and overwhelmed with excess, including kitchen overflow, making the desk unusable.

Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode.Does it happen that you did not have a plan to release or declutter an item and then when someone is over or you are in a conversation you suddenly decide to release an item in response to their expressed need or your understanding that they would make use of it?
I’ve recently found myself offering up an item I would have said no to decluttering a day earlier but which I get an aha that they could really use it. It’s a strong instinct to read a situation and the recipient and I both have a wide grin. I think it’s partly because I am further in my decluttering journey and my mind is getting a better hold on what I have, where I have it, and being able to quickly decide if it’s a keep or donate when another person expresses a need or a strong want that easily trump mine.
