Survey #182 Response from Anna
Pronouns | She/her |
---|---|
Name the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that contributes the most stuff to your living space, including raw materials, tools, equipment, other supplies, reference materials, specialized furniture, etc. | Dressmaking |
Reflecting on your answer to the previous question, describe the part of the activity that contributes most to the clutter in your home. Your answer may be based on volume, size, complexity, or any other factor that makes it difficult to store and manage the stuff for your activity. | I see lovely fabric and plan what to make of it in a much higher rate than I finnish the garments. Sometimes the thought about how much fabric I already own makes me refrain from buying more, sometimes I come up with all sorts of so called reasonable reasons to buy it anyway. |
Reflecting on your answer to the first question, describe how the cluttered state of stuff related to this activity negatively impacts your ability to carry out or enjoy the activity. | The feeling of being overwhelmed makes it a bit more of a challenge to actually choose what new project to start. This is such a luxurious problem, so it's not really a problem, I feel ashamed to admit it. |
About how much time do you spend on the activity in question in an average week? | 2-4 hours |
What is the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that you think EVERYONE should try? | Knitting |
Name one or more of your favorite Clutter Fairy-isms (e.g., “thin the herd”) or decluttering and organizing mnemonic devices (e.g., OHIO—Only Handle It Once). | Appricate the value of your time |
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). | You have already given so much great advice. It's me who need to start using what I have learned. The words about grief, that grief consumes enormous amounts of energy, have been a great comfort! |
Future topics | I have been thinking about time and space. I have less space than my mother had during our adult lives, so I have been limited by how much space I have when it comes to buying fabric. My mother had so much more space, but she didn't have as much time to browse and look at beautiful fabric. The more time we have the higher the risk of collecting too much maybe? I think one of the things I have learned from you is that we need not only look at our space but also our schedule, and how our schedule might change, sometimes abruptly. When my father died my schedule changed so much and a lot of things got to be put on hold, especially hobbies, because I needed to spend more time looking after my mother. This is something we should learn in school! Luckily for us we get to ask you questions. So... How does one plan for including a reasonable amount of hobbies? |
