Name the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that contributes the most stuff to your living space, including raw materials, tools, equipment, other supplies, reference materials, specialized furniture, etc. | Fountain pens, ink and stationery |
Reflecting on your answer to the previous question, describe the part of the activity that contributes most to the clutter in your home. Your answer may be based on volume, size, complexity, or any other factor that makes it difficult to store and manage the stuff for your activity. | I keep over 500 small ink samples (5 ml small tubes of ink) which I attempt to "file" by color in special trays and containers ... and it is a challenge to find the specific sample I need because of how many I keep. I have a fountain pen You Tube channel so that's why I keep so many (for comparison and review). I have noticed that I can manage 350 samples pretty well but more than that and my containers and my brain just can't keep them organized well enough to find one easily. I've come to realize that some must GO. I did purge any that were too old or dried up ... no longer useful. Now I'm working at making choices within each color family and setting limits of 25 per color sub group. When I exceeded my trays and containers, I resorted to Gallon baggies which is awful because they are just jumbled in there ... it's too much. It's probably my "fear of not finding a specific ink" or having to "repurchase" a sample that keeps me holding on to too many. |
Reflecting on your answer to the first question, describe how the cluttered state of stuff related to this activity negatively impacts your ability to carry out or enjoy the activity. | The biggest cost to me is TIME. It takes a lot more time for me to locate a specific ink sample for comparison for a video or to use the sample in my writing. It can also reduce the enjoyment of the hobby for me because if it's too big of a chore to manage the samples I often avoid those and they continue to drain my energy because I KNOW that I need to deal with the problem. I can spend more time locating samples than actually writing or creating content. |
About how much time do you spend on the activity in question in an average week? | 10 hours or so a week ... granted this is connected to content making which also earns me some ad revenue. |
What is the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that you think EVERYONE should try? | Journaling |
