Express your gratitude for something in your home that you plan to keep indefinitely. How does it support the life you love? | I love the wardrobe that I bought a few years ago. It is not very big (maybe 6ft across?) and when I bought it, I did not think that it would fit all my clothes. The lady selling it said that both her and her husband’s clothing both fit in it, plus their spare bedsheets! That created a goal for me to fit all of my clothes into that closet. I thought I would need a dresser as well, but I am pleasantly surprised that I don’t! I have a small carry on that I put seasonal things in. And the closet also fits my spare purses- which I hope to reduce. My secret with clothes is to try to not buy- and alter everything that does not fit (things can also be enlarged in creative ways). That is in addition to decluttering and giving things away. |
Describe someone or something that has helped you on your decluttering and organizing journey. This may be an idea, a story, a person, a book, a resource, etc. | The Clutter Fairy really is a source of inspiration! I love the variety and richness of content and the non judgmental attitude. I am also grateful to my aunt for helping me declutter twice. It also helps me to imagine someone else cherishing that item, that brings me waaay more joy than it being kept without use. Knowing that things deteriorate over time is also a powerful motivator, as is the fact that everything emits dust or fumes somehow and this affects our health in cluttered spaces. |
Describe something that you’re grateful for having been able to declutter and release from your life. | I am soooo grateful for having released old office-related papers, journals, and books. |
Identify something in your space for which you feel grateful, but which you’d consider releasing so that someone else can enjoy and appreciate it. | Barely worn shoes. I have put these aside, and they are currently with someone who wants to do a sale- however, the sale has not happened yet. |
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode. | Suggestion for a survey: decluttering habits abd quirks around the world. For example where I am, people have storage under their mattresses- the beds are built that way, and they get their balconies enclosed to become storage- at the same time, they always put things still in useful condition next to the garbage and not in it, so that it can be taken. Japan apparently has a day in the year where people pack theit things and put them on the sidewalk for people to take overnight! I’m curious about other global, regional, or personal stories. |
Future topics | See earlier notes. Also, anonymously: I am having trouble decluttering old business cards (of other people) from my past jobs. I keep in touch with some old colleagues, so I don’t need their cards, but there are others- and I wonder if I should send them info about my new business- but I know that it’s now so easy to run ads and have algorithms reach your ideal audience. It may be awkward to get back in touch with some people- but for some reason, I’m avoiding decluttering these cards. I did a bit a few months ago, but I know that they should all go. I’m down to one shoebox but I know there’s clutter that takes up space but sometimes is not as toxic as clutter that is less, but has more emotional space. While I’m sharing the other answers under an alias, this one is anonymous. Thx. |
