If you shop in thrift stores, resale shops, charity stores, pawn shops, or other sources of second-hand goods, what kinds of things do you look for? Are there any categories of items that you would ONLY buy used? Any categories of items that you would NEVER buy used? | I look for hardware, art, studio pottery and hard cover books from the 1900's to 1930's. I won't by used kitchen appliances or electronics. I don't buy used clothing any more because it is hard to find something I like in my size. |
If you’ve ever completed a major decluttering project, have you experienced re-cluttering anxiety afterwards? Please describe your experience and how you’ve tried to manage this feeling. | I generally don't worry about re-cluttering because I know the volume of what coming in is less than 10% of what is going out. |
How often do you deep-clean your kitchen, going above and beyond whatever daily or several-time-a-week routines you maintain? | At least once a month |
What routines or habits have been useful to ensure that your kitchen is always clean? | Dishes let don't pile up. Clean and put dishes away right away. Everything has a designated place. Perishables are planned into meals quickly. Freezer management to prevent freezer burned food. Limit reusable storage container and throw out damaged plastics. I only have a toaster, an electric kettle, a container with wooden spoons and spatulas, and S & P on the counter tops. Regularly question if I'm using all the cookware I own and donate anything that does not make the cut. |
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode. | I have been decluttering my home for many years now with an eye to downsizing within the next 2-4 years. Whilst I am very good at moving a handful of items out of the house every few weeks, it still feels I'm just picking away at it. I still look at the entire inventory and see way too much that needs to be edited out. As much as I am trying to organize to make the future transition smoother, it feels like it will still be a chaotic scramble to purge when the time comes. What are some of the strategies to overcoming this road block? How can I make a bigger dent now? P.S.(Also, I have a spouse who holds on to a lot of IT equipment and musical instruments, which takes up a lot of real estate) |
